Chen Cheng-po, an outstanding painter from Chiayi, Taiwan, was born in the year 1895, the year when Taiwan was ceded by the Qing government to Japan. By virtue of his superb artistic performance and whole-hearted involvement in art promotion campaigns, he became the most representative artist in modern Taiwan. The artist’s strong “fatherland consciousness” prompted him to go straight to Shanghai immediately after finishing his studies in the graduate program of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in Japan. In Shanghai, Chen Cheng-po successively took up teaching and administrative posts in a number of art colleges and also held various public service positions in the art sector. On the strength of his artwork, he was recognized as one of “China’s Top Twelve Artists”, entitling him to represent China in exhibiting his work in the Chicago World Expo.

The five years in which Chen Cheng-po stayed in Shanghai was in the 1930s when Shanghai was in its heyday. Out of his open, ardent and gregarious personality, he had made friends far and wide in both the Western painting and Chinese painting circles. In fact, the artwork and letter exchanges he kept from those days have now become valuable cultural and historical relics of Shanghai in the 1930s. Later, because of the Japanese invasion of China and the outbreak of the “January 28 Incident”, Chen was forced to leave Shanghai and returned to Taiwan.

The year 2014 is the 80th anniversary of Chen Cheng-po’s bidding farewell to Shanghai and also the 120th anniversary of his birth. The purpose of organizing “Misty Vapor on the High Seas—Chen Cheng-po’s Art Exhibition” is to trace the lifelong footsteps of this great artist with particular emphasis on the Shanghai period. By adding an introduction on how his artworks are restored, it is hoped that the positive significance of reconstructing modern and contemporary art history and reinforcing cross-Strait cultural exchanges can be highlighted.
