鋼筆速寫的線條潦亂,約略可以看見鋪設電線桿的街道與兩旁的屋舍,以及河面上的帆船。能夠清楚辨認的建築物,僅有畫面左側的淡水禮拜堂。那座高聳的尖塔,是陳澄波諸多淡水畫作裡共同的座標軸。而若比對老照片,距離禮拜堂不遠處,一棟四披水屋頂、立面有山頭裝飾的建築,似乎也被選擇為畫中景物,安排在尖塔的旁邊。
The lines of this ink sketch are intricate; almost visible are the houses on either side of the street lined with poles and the sailboats on the river. The sole building that can be clearly identified is the Chapel of Presbyterian Church on the left of the picture plane. That towering spire is the coordinate axis prevalent in numerous Tamsui landscape paintings by Chen Cheng-po. In comparison with the old photograph, near the Chapel, the building with a hip roof and a pediment is probably the chosen scene arranged beside the spire steeple.

Judging from the relative position, the building with a hip roof and a pediment is probably the structure depicted beside the steeple.

陳澄波的視點應在禮拜堂北側的高地。左下角的近景處有圍欄斜過,遮攔了部分視野。往遠景處眺望,長街的盡頭消失得有些突兀,視線跟著街道延展到末尾,忽然就沒入了淡水河。畫面裡的遠近比例並不明顯,可能也有違反線性透視的想法。整體的視覺安排,頗有一些趣味。
Chen Cheng-po’s viewpoint must be focused from a high place in the north of the Chapel. The foreground at the left bottom corner is slanted by the fence to cover part of the visual field. In the background, the end of the street disappears somewhat abruptly; the line of sight follows the stretch of the street to the end but suddenly sinks into the Tamsui River. The picture doesn’t show a definite scale of distance, which may well be an idea to violate the linear perspective. As a result, the total arrangement of vision is full of interest.

與視角相近的〈淡水(一)〉以及〈淡江風景〉相比,這張速寫顯然更強調淡水河的風景。遼闊的河面上,點點帆影宛若青空裡的浮雲,緩慢地游移飄移,為作品增添了一些悠遠閒適的意趣。
In comparison with the paintings that have a similar visual angle, Tamsui (1) and Tamsui Landscape, it is evident that the scene of Tamsui River is emphasized much more in this sketch. The shadows of sails drifting slowly on the broad river look like the fleeting clouds in the blue sky, adding a touch of distant quiet, ease and comfort to the picture.

出於一種對土地始終熱烈的關懷,陳澄波的風景畫,總會特意表現一些在地的文化特色。而在淡水這座積累著厚重歷史的港口,形形色色的中式帆船,自然也被他的彩筆所捕捉,成為作品裡反覆出現的題材。
Out of his everlasting concern about the land, Chen Cheng-po would deliberately represent some distinguishing features of local cultures in his landscape paintings. At Tamsui, a harbor which has accumulated a profound, significant history, various Chinese sailboats were naturally caught by his pen and became the subject repeatedly depicted in his works.
